  20.    PALO ALTO, Calif., Feb. 16, 1993 -- Hewlett-Packard
  21. Company today announced Release 2 of the HP SNAplus family
  22. of communications products.  The new release is based on a
  23. client/server model, which allows HP business systems,
  24. servers and workstations to access SNA(1) networks.  Release 2
  25. expands communications capabilities by supporting a greater
  26. range of wide area networks and local area networks.  It
  27. also enhances usability and ease of application development
  28. in an SNA environment.

  31.    SNAplus Release 2 significantly increases the
  32. functionality of the SNAplus program previously announced in
  33. March 1992, which delivers a wide range of SNA networking
  34. capabilities.

  37.    With this announcement, the HP 9000 Series 800 business
  38. systems and servers and HP Apollo 9000 Series 700
  39. workstations become easier to integrate with the mainframe.
  40. They also are more useful for customers migrating
  41. applications to the client-server model.

  43.    The HP 9000 family now has additional capabilities for
  44. communicating with traditional IBM environments, including
  45. the mainframe and IBM midrange systems.

  48.    "The SNAplus program enables HP customers to integrate
  49. UNIX(2) system-based computers into IBM networks," said
  50. Randall R. Meals, general manager of HP's Information
  51. Networks Division.  "Release 2 greatly expands this
  52. capability, positioning the HP 9000 as the premier UNIX
  53. solution for mainframe rightsizing.  This will significantly
  54. help customers and application developers integrate
  55. applications in an SNA environment."

  58. HP SNAplus Release 2 Capabilities
  59.  
  60.    SNAplus Release 2 incorporates many enhancements that
  61. strengthen the HP 9000 family's offering in IBM
  62. communications.  This includes products that allow greater
  63. choice in connectivity with SNA over Token Ring, SNA over
  64. X.25, interactive graphics and the NetView API(3) and LUA(4) API
  65. for application development.

  68.    The SNAplusLink product has been expanded to support SNA
  69. over Token Ring.  This allows an HP 9000 to communicate with
  70. an IBM system when both are connected to Token Ring
  71. networks.  SNA over Token Ring supports both 4 Mbps and 16
  72. Mbps speeds, a dramatic increase over the previous
  73. communications speeds.  As a result, customers will find
  74. significant increases in throughput with SNA over Token
  75. Ring.

  78.    Customers with installed X.25 networks or those planning
  79. to install standards-based networking now have a solution
  80. with SNA over X.25, also known as QLLC(5).  SNA over X.25
  81. allows SNA traffic to go over an X.25 network, providing
  82. customers with greater communications flexibility and a
  83. bridge to standards-based networking.

  86.    SNAplus Release 2 supports several new IBM 3270 emulator
  87. enhancements, including Motif(tm) and seven-color support.
  88. With Motif and color support, users will find it easier to
  89. differentiate parts of their screens, increasing their
  90. overall productivity.

  93.    Release 2 also includes SNAplusAPI, a collection of APIs
  94. that makes it easier for application developers to develop
  95. SNA programs.  Enhancements to SNAplusAPI for Release 2 are
  96. NetView API, which allows programmers to build network-
  97. management support into their applications; and LUA API,
  98. which allows access to different logical units including
  99. LU0, 1, 2 and 3.  Using these programming calls, application
  100. developers can now build specific commands to printers and
  101. terminals.

  104.    Also included in the SNAplusAPI is LU 6.2, which was
  105. available with SNAplus Release 1.  LU 6.2 allows
  106. program-to-program communications for applications like file
  107. transfer, remote database queries and electronic-mail
  108. access.

  111.    SNAplus Release 2 also includes SNAplus3179G, which
  112. emulates IBM's 3179G color graphics display station,
  113. provides cut-and-paste capability and supports three window
  114. sizes.  SNAplus3179G increases customers'
  115. terminal-connectivity options for SNA environments.

  118.    In addition, SNAplus Release 2 includes SNAplusRJE, which
  119. emulates an IBM 3770 terminal and supports batch processing
  120. to IBM mainframes.

  123. HP SNAplus:  A Multiphase Program
  124.  
  125.    Today's announcement increases the functionality of the
  126. SNAplus program.  Future phases are planned for the end of
  127. 1993 and will include HP server support for PC clients,
  128. CPI-C support and 16-bit character support for Asian
  129. languages.  Subsequent phases of SNAplus under investigation
  130. include APPN end-node capability and integration of SNAplus
  131. into the HP 3000 Series 900 MPE/iX business systems and
  132. server product line, which offers extensive SNA capabilities
  133. today.

  138.    The SNAplusLink product is available for the HP Apollo
  139. 9000 Series 700 workstation product line and the HP 9000
  140. Series 800 business system and server product line.

  144. products are available on the HP 9000 Series 300, and HP
